Finish or Restart a Season
Every competition in 4league reaches an end. Finishing a season closes it out: it locks in the final standings, crowns the winner, and hands out trophies and achievements to the top three teams. Restarting takes the same competition into a fresh season — archiving everything that just happened so the table, the matches, and the records of the old season are never lost.
Finish vs. Restart
These are two separate actions with two different purposes. Most competitions use them in sequence — finish to crown a champion, then restart for the next campaign — but you can do either on its own.
| Action | What it does | Reversible? |
|---|---|---|
| Finish | Marks the competition completed, freezes the final standings, notifies the winner, and awards trophies & achievements to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. | The completed flag can be cleared, but the awards already handed out stay. |
| Restart | Archives the whole current season, clears its matches (and optionally its teams), regenerates the schedule, and bumps the season counter to the next number. | Yes — but only the most recent restart, and only before the new season has been played. See the warning below. |
Finishing a season awards teams — 1st, 2nd and 3rd place — not players. There is no season MVP or player-of-the-season award handed out on finish. Player-of-the-match (MOTM) recognition is per match only and is unrelated to closing the season.
Finish a Season
Finishing tells 4league the competition is over. The app calculates the final table one last time, records who won, and distributes the end-of-season awards.
Make sure every match has a result
The final standings are computed from the matches as they stand. Enter the score for any remaining fixtures before you finish, so the table reflects the real outcome.
Open the competition and choose "Finish"
From the competition's season management options, pick the finish action. 4league stamps the competition as completed and stops it from expecting any further teams.
The winner is crowned and notified
The app computes the final standings, identifies the top three, and sends a push notification to the competition's followers announcing the winning team and inviting them to see the final ranking.
The organizer of a 10-team spring league enters the score for the final round on Sunday evening. With every match played, they open the competition and tap "Finish". 4league freezes the table, sends every follower a notification that the top team has won the league, and writes a trophy onto the champions' record. The league is now marked completed.
Trophies & Achievements on Finish
When a season is finished, 4league hands out awards to the top three teams in the final standings:
| Position | What the team receives |
|---|---|
| 1st place | A trophy record is added to the team, its trophy counter is incremented, the firstTeam achievement is unlocked, and the team is notified. |
| 2nd place | The secondTeam achievement is unlocked and the team is notified. |
| 3rd place | The thirdTeam achievement is unlocked and the team is notified. |
The lifted-trophy counter that shows on a team's profile is incremented only for the champion. Second and third place earn an achievement badge and a notification, but they don't add to the trophy count.
Restart a Season
Restarting keeps the competition — its name, settings, and teams — but resets it for a new season. Before anything is cleared, the entire current season is archived so nothing is lost.
The current season is archived
4league snapshots the whole season into an archive record: the competition setup, the teams with their full rosters, every match, the standings and statistics, and any playoff / play-out data. The archive is what powers historical season views — and what a revert restores from.
The old matches are cleared
The current season's matches and their player-of-the-match votes are deleted from the live competition (they live on in the archive). For knockout and group competitions you can also choose to clear the teams — see below.
A fresh schedule is generated and the season counter advances
4league regenerates the fixture schedule for the new season and increments the season number (season 1 becomes season 2, and so on). The competition is ready to play again.
Keep or Clear Teams
When you restart, you can decide whether the teams carry over into the new season or are wiped and recreated. This choice is the clear teams switch.
The clear-teams option is offered only for Cup/Knockout and Groups competitions, where a new season often means a fresh set of entrants. For a League, teams always carry over to the new season — there is no clear-teams switch.
- Keep teams — the same teams and rosters continue into the new season; only the matches are reset.
- Clear teams (cup & groups only) — the current teams are removed and the bracket / group structure is regenerated empty, ready for you to add the new season's entrants.
Reverting a Restart
If you restarted by mistake, 4league can undo it and bring the previous season back from its archive.
A revert undoes only the single most recent restart. To do so it deletes the new season's matches and restores the archived ones, then resets the season counter and the completed flag. Any results you've already entered in the new season are lost. In practice, revert is safe only before you've played any of the new season — once the new season is under way, treat the restart as permanent.
An organizer restarts a cup a week too early, before the final was meant to be played. Because no new-season matches have been entered yet, they revert immediately: 4league removes the freshly generated (empty) fixtures, restores the archived bracket and results, and the competition is back exactly where it was. Had a single new-season match already been scored, that result would have been wiped by the revert.
Who Can Finish or Restart
Finishing, restarting, and reverting a restart are all organizer-only actions, restricted to the account that owns the competition (and admins granted organizer rights over it). Players, referees, team managers, and fans cannot end or reset a season.
