Make Substitutions
A substitution is the one live event that pairs two players: one comes off, one comes on. In 4league you record it from the live match using the exchange picker — pick the player going out, then the player coming in — and it’s logged against the match clock just like a goal or a card. This guide covers who can record substitutions, the out→in flow, and where the picker is available.
The exchange picker is the standard live-event modal, not a separate or mobile-only screen. You can record substitutions from iOS, Android and the 4league web app, exactly the same way.
Who Can Record a Substitution
Substitutions are gated by the same userCanManageMatch rule as every other live action. Three kinds of user are allowed:
| Who | Condition |
|---|---|
| Organizer / co-organizer | A competition admin or owner can always record a substitution. |
| Assigned referee | A referee assigned to that match can record a substitution. |
| Team Manager of a playing team | Only when the competition has managersCanAddScore enabled. |
Record a Substitution
Open the event menu for the team
With the live clock running, choose the team making the change and open its event menu — the same menu you use for goals and cards. Choose Exchange (substitution).
Pick the player coming off
The picker opens. Select the player who is leaving the pitch — the player going out.
Pick the player coming on
Then select the player who is entering — the player coming in. The substitution is recorded as a pair (out → in) via addExchange, sent to the server and stamped with the match clock.
Out First, Then In
The exchange picker asks for the player going out first, then the player coming in. 4league stores the pair together, so the player’s timeline shows who replaced whom — not just that a change happened.
Like every live event, a substitution is sent the moment you complete the picker and is tagged with the current match time, so it sits in order on the match timeline alongside goals and cards. Got the wrong pair? An organizer can re-open the match to fix the record — see Correct or Delete a Result.
The away manager wants fresh legs up front. The referee opens the away team’s event menu, chooses Exchange, picks the tiring striker as the player going out, then the substitute as the player coming in. The change is logged at 65′ and appears on both players’ timelines — one off, one on. He does it from the web app at the scorer’s table; the picker behaves identically to the phone on the touchline.
